Down A Gravel Road
Finding Curry Road

Welcome to the Adventures of Living On Curry Road

Rye, Arkansas is located eleven miles north of Warren, AR, fifteen miles west of Monticello, AR and approximately thirty miles south of Pine Bluff, AR. Rye has been the home of the Curry family for over five generations. This family has farmed this land producing cattle, chickens, timber. The area is beautiful and the family culture is equally impressive with its generations of family that continue to live by the standards that made America a great country.

Rye, AR and the Curry family are a story of strong American values and the building of personal character, the love of God and a lot of very hard dedicated work. Donald Curry and Kay Curry are the current owners of most of the original farm land originally developed by the generations of Curry family. Kay Curry is the daughter of Jimmy and Hazel Baker and married Donald over fifty years ago. Both have continued the legacy of the farm life on Curry Road. Donald and Kay have raised a family of two daughters and one son. Mark Curry currently operates a cattle operation as well as four chicken houses on his part of the property. Lisa Tooke, wife of Dennis Tooke of Lake Charles, La and Donna Curry, of Little Rock, AR plan to retire back to the farm land when thier retirement time comes.

Jane and I were asked to help in a restoration of the 104 year old house shown above. We are so blessed to be allowed to have input as well as provide a labor of love to help restore this house to its original beauty for Donald and Kay Curry

As Jane and I came into the property with our RV, we came down the gravel road leading to Curry Road. We came down this gravel road and had to stop and take a picture. We are including that picture with this overview so you too can see the beauty of this area.

It reminded us of the book “The Painted House” by John Grisham and we hope you will get the same response.

Remember when I wrote about the chickens being gone and Mark coming in 1st place in his regional group?
Well the new chickens arrived today, some 11 days after the other were taken to their final destination.

Jeff, Carrie and Dyland Foote, the sweetest family, came and delivered the new babies.  Jeff and Carrie put out 100,000 chickens in four house in less than two hours.  That takes skill and experience.  They were assisted by Dyland who also handles the phone when mom and dad or doing their work.  Jeff and Carrie worked like a NASCAR racing team unloading the chickens from the "Chicken Limo" (tractor trailer picture following).

The little chicks were yellow and looked like 100,000 easter chickens at the mall.  There were two black chickens, (no kidding, really) and they are special in a group of 100,000 yellow ones. When they arrive the houses are heated to 89 to 90 degrees, the water lines have been leveled to "eye level" for the little chicks and their food has already been served.

Salute to the Foote family for the hard work.  The chickens are already growing.  They will increase in size to approxmiately 6 pounds in a cycle of  than 50 days.   Amazing,,,,,,

Oh yes, we did a lot of tree trimming and yard cleaning today and had one of the biggest clean up fires I've seen.  Jane did an extreme amount of yard work and its beginning to look like the stately home it has been for over 90 years.

Moving Ahead With Great Speed

Well, we have been moving along at a slower pace with some strong demands from the ole chicken farm life style but we are now moving at a great pace .  Chickens have been taken away and Mark came in 1st Place in his regional group.  Quite an accomplishment in such a competitive business.  Mark and Donald work very hard and they are so dedicated to quality production.  This chicken farm business is a science and requires so much attention.   Someone in Northwest Arkansas should be happy to have a number of these type producers.

But, as we said, we are now back on the game plan.  Above you can see Jane doing some caulking on the windows.  We all agreed that we needed to rebuild the windows in the sleeping room and restore the windows to as close to their original condition as possible.  (Strange as it sounds, these windows were hand built on site years ago. They are not "pre-hung" type windows but rather each window was built for each window and then installed in a track.)  Therefore, we replaced the old worn wood framing, replaced the worn window framing, and then reset the windows.  We also must re-install new panes in the windows and do so with the same process as they were originally created.  These windows were custom built, in place and are indeed unique.  So, Jane and Kay have agreed to reinstall any missing panes and broken panes back with the same percision and efforts as original construction.  Lots of labor, but worth the effort and we appreciate the hard work of the ladies.

We also started the plumbing process bringing the water line from the meter at Curry Road to the house and then into the bath, laundry and kitchen area.  We've got about 300 feet of ditch and work to do and its worth every inch.  The picture above (if you really check it closely) shows the line starting at the road and moving to the house.  With luck we'll have water in the house before the next snow.   (By the way, did I tell you it snowed this past Sunday,,,,,, Yep,,,, March,,,, snow,,,,,, with the daily temperature returning to 70 plus degrees tomorrow!)

The yard is also being "turned under" and re-leveled for the coming spring and summer growth.  It turns out that as we turned the soil over we discovered a new complete garden area with dirt so good that we think it will grow anything.

Can't beat this growing blessing.  We're actually getting so excited and feeling so blessed that we are beginning to "look over our shoulder".

This is work with a purpose and we hope you feel the love of the effort.  We want everyone to enjoy the result in the coming months.

By the way, we're gaining followers and local people are expressing an interest in the process.  Anyone that wants to provide input should let us know by email.    You can email carlnpierce@gmail.com , kaycurry67@gmail.com or janebpierce@gmail.com

More to follow so stay tuned.

Well, we've got a new security system.  His name is "J D", short for Jimmy Dean (get it?  Sausage or winnie dog!!)   JD is the newest Curry in this project and he is a prize addition.  He came via a rescue by Donna Curry and it seems like a relationship made in Heaven.     Donna was interested enough in the project to select the paint for the interior rooms as well as graciously providing the paint.  How good is that!    We are grateful for the contribution and we certainly intend to use JD as a regular guard dog.   JD has become great friends with "Miss Kitty" as you can see in the following picture.   We later learned that Miss Kitty was giving training and instruction to JD.  She was demonstrating the art of disguise.  Miss Kitty handles the greetings, and as we understand, JD is supposed to protect the entire area when he is "on duty".

Good Day to All,,,, its been busy here today.   As with all Lower Arkansas (LA)  communities, storms and tornadoes and all kinds of situations call for the need of a "Frady Hole" or some times called a storm shelter.   Well this one is over 90 years old and its still standing.  The picture on the left is the beginning of the cleaning       process.  The picture on the right is what Jane has accomplished.  So far, three scorpions, many "dirt dobbers" nest and many spider nests were disturbed.  Jane did not know any of that when she was in there cleaning.         Guess what,  we had tornado warnings all around us tonight so, good job Jane and timely also. Now we can go in read our "Sears Catalog" and wait for the "stuff" to go by.  I wonder just what else has happened in this "Cave " of surrival?

During the past few days the number of Blue Birds have been increasing in alarming numbers.  They seem to be thrilled with the picture of themselves and they constantly fly into our tinted windows and the windows of the Honda.  This one is just amazed with the prospect of meeting someone as interesting as him or her self.   The second picture looks like the bird in embeded in the window but actually it is an optical illusion and very interesting.

One of the great things of this old house is a "sleeping room".  It was a room that was normally located in the western area of the home and situated to benefit from the "breezes" of the seasons.   Prevailing winds are typically from the west in this area.  This was designed since air conditioning at the time of this construction was virtually non-existant.  So, people build these sleeping rooms with lots of windows so in the evening and night time hours they coud sleep in comfort from the gifts of God.  Neat Huh?????  Well, we had to remove these windows and we found out they were built "on site" in the original construction.  So, we tried to remove the windows and save the history of the original windows.  These are not "single hung" or "double hung" windows but custom built years ago.  I think we were successful and it took a lot of time and labor to accomplish.  Donald, Mark and Kay Curry were on site and hands on as well as Jane and myself.   Boy, are we glad this is done and the outcome was deemed to be successful.  In the follong pictures the first picture is the wall after we had removed the windows, the next picture is after the reconstruction was completed and the windows re-installed from the outside view and the final picture is with Kay on the  inside giving her sigh of relief.   Job well don by all involved and history is preserved.  This is a great old house and we want to keep all we can of its original construction.

Getting Behind, Intending To Catch Up

Well, we've been working so hard (and enjoying every minute of it) and we've gotten behind on our postings.
Trust us, we'll all start posting so we can keep you up to date.

Well its time to put in the garden and the "old pro" is ready to start the plowing and tilling.  Donald has been putting in gardens for over 60 years so we were more than happy to have him do this one.   We'll keep you posted

Gardening is part of the spring time season and everyone at the place is egar to get past the winter and get on with the outside life.  One our two new little cats will have to leave the garden spot when Donald starts his tilling and plowing.
Well, Jane is supervising the activities and enjoying every minute.  This garden will be her first of this size and I think she is ready for the work.  Sounds like tomatoes, beans, peas, lettus and all the good stuff.  Walmart will miss us this summer.

Well, first things first.  We had to re-wire the house from the transformer to the outlets and switches.   Cold rainy days were the situation during the process.  The C&L Energy workers were really great and very knowledgeable and worked their hearts out to put things where we wanted them and still provided all the service we needed.  (Upper Left Pic)

We wanted to restart a deep water well that was shut down for about 8 years.  Donald was supervising, Mark (Curry) was second supervisor and I was the provider.  Provider is very important, that's the guy that when  somebody says "hand me a hammer" actually hands the hammer requested.  It is helpful if you can bend down, look important and keep the right attitude.  Also, if you have a few extra pounds you can get the real heavy things real quick.  Eventually, we had to give up the well due to many unexpected problems.   (Upper Right Pic)
While we worked on all the projects we continued to be watched by the animals.  They still haven't exactly welcomed us yet.  We keep finding deposits that may indicate they are not entirely happy with our efforts.

Name change

When Carl decided to start this blog he called it Fun on Curry Road but pretty soon it got changed to Living on Curry Road. I think it was somewhere around the day he buried the RV in the front yard. He'll never live that down.

Our Second Day On Curry Road Feb 9 2010

We were not readily received in the new neighborhood.  Sarge, the local sheriff was waiting on a table when we got there and welcomed us after some discussion with his family of cat brothers.  It was touch and go for awhile but we were finally accepted as part of the family.

Our nearest neighbor watched closely as we extended the slides on our RV.  All the other neighbors were too busy eating lunch to really care what we were doing.   Kinda nice to have these kind of neighbors.

Our Moving Day To Curry Road

We left Little Rock, Maumelle RV Park (above left) on just the right day.  It snowed 6 inches while we were trying to pack up and move out.  Finally, we arrived at 2640 Curry Road (above right) just in time to park the RV in a wonderful position.   It took a wrecker from Pine Bluff, a four wheel drive Massey Ferguson tractor, a road grader from a neighbor and the help of 8 local people that proved to be the real answer.  We sent the wrecker back to Pine Bluff, the local fellows were all farmers and/or loggers and they knew how to get us out.  Not a single scratch either!!!!   We tried to pay for their help and guess what,,,,,, nothing doing, just glad to help.  However, I am now known as the guy that can't back up or drive safely.   Oh well.   Jane's answer, take reverse out of the RV transmission.  (At least that's the answer I can share on this site)   More to come
