Down A Gravel Road

Down A Gravel Road
Finding Curry Road

Welcome to the Adventures of Living On Curry Road

Rye, Arkansas is located eleven miles north of Warren, AR, fifteen miles west of Monticello, AR and approximately thirty miles south of Pine Bluff, AR. Rye has been the home of the Curry family for over five generations. This family has farmed this land producing cattle, chickens, timber. The area is beautiful and the family culture is equally impressive with its generations of family that continue to live by the standards that made America a great country.

Rye, AR and the Curry family are a story of strong American values and the building of personal character, the love of God and a lot of very hard dedicated work. Donald Curry and Kay Curry are the current owners of most of the original farm land originally developed by the generations of Curry family. Kay Curry is the daughter of Jimmy and Hazel Baker and married Donald over fifty years ago. Both have continued the legacy of the farm life on Curry Road. Donald and Kay have raised a family of two daughters and one son. Mark Curry currently operates a cattle operation as well as four chicken houses on his part of the property. Lisa Tooke, wife of Dennis Tooke of Lake Charles, La and Donna Curry, of Little Rock, AR plan to retire back to the farm land when thier retirement time comes.

Jane and I were asked to help in a restoration of the 104 year old house shown above. We are so blessed to be allowed to have input as well as provide a labor of love to help restore this house to its original beauty for Donald and Kay Curry

As Jane and I came into the property with our RV, we came down the gravel road leading to Curry Road. We came down this gravel road and had to stop and take a picture. We are including that picture with this overview so you too can see the beauty of this area.

It reminded us of the book “The Painted House” by John Grisham and we hope you will get the same response.

A Little More Update

We have about 65 gallons of paint and we're waiting on the new tin roof.   The tin roof is the hold up for painting because a lot of eve and roof structure work is going to be done in preparation for the new roof.  The tin roof will be the color of "tin" or actually will not be colored at all.   We all agreed that would be the most authentic roof.

We'll paint the exterior a full white color with some black screens on the windows.   The interior is going to be a mixture of shades of violet & blue (the living room and dinning room), yellow(in the kitchen) and green (the sun room).  All a lot of planning by the ladies and all very well done.  It looks a lot like Sherwin Williams show room in the front bed room.  You'll also notice the new subfloor decking, getting ready to lay the laminate flooring.

You can also tell the location of the refrigerator (kinda) in the next picture.  The entire north wall of the kitchen will be where the sink and counter top area will be.  We're thinking about making the "mud room" {just thru the door in the picture to the right of the frig.} a part of the kitchen/eating area but lots of other work to be done first.

You can't believe how much cleaning Jane (and me when I have to)  has done.  This old house has held up great over many many years.  It was totally vacant for a couple of years and it remained solid and strong without any up keep.

We have completed most of the hard things and time consuming efforts.  Now we can begin to work on the "pretty" things that will help give the house the appearance Donald and Kay are looking for.

By the way did we say WE'RE ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!!

Carl and Jane, (and of course, you know who)

Work Is Showing (Finally)

We thought we would give a few pics of the more boring progress.  Its been a hot summer and the days are getting hotter, but,  Thanksgiving is approaching so we got to keep at it.  The work is really fun and not at all like WORK.    These pics are the result of basically a few weeks of work since I have been in Miami for over 5 weeks, so, Jane, Kay and Donald have keep the ship sailing.

We were able to get these custom built cabinets for a "song" really, a song.  Custom made, brass hardware, four eye drop in cooking top.  We think they will fit where they are once we get the floor correct.  The hutch in the background will be come a part of the counter top with lights inside the hutch shinning down.

We also got 20 or so shelves that are finished just like the cabinets and we plan to make open shelfs on the walls instead of cabinets.  Hopefully that will resemble the era of the house's construction.

More later,

Jane's Place and Melons

Well, here she is, at her best.  Donald and Kay gave her some water melon seeds and she planted them.
Guess what, they grew and grew and grew.  Some how, the grass started growing too, and it grew and grew and grew.   Jane had to get on her combat boots and wade in to find them little boogers, but she made it.

Finally she found them, lots of 'em, and boy were they good.  Too bad, somebody ate every last one of them.

When she got thru, she had to retire to the front porch.  I think this will be "the place" to be this Thanksgiving,,,,, we're working on that,,,,, hard,,,,, but Good Lord willing,,,,,, we'll make it.

Well, anyway, if you want to see why we love this place so much, take a look at the following.
This is what its all about, early morning sunshine, peace and beauty beyond anything in the world in our minds.   This is truly God's work and is he good at it or what?

Later,,,,,

Carl, Jane and of course our old friend Charlie (in the spirit)

Long Time No Post

Well, as usual, we've been slow in our posting,  because we have been working our little butts off.
But,,, boy are we pleased and happy.  We owe all the progress to the dedication and desires of Donald and Kay (and Donna, Mark and the Tooks).

We have almost completed the bathroom and it looks OK so far.  Still a little more work to be done but the major work is completed with the flooring, paneling, new shower stall, mirror, lights etc.  (see the pictures included)

We have completed most of the leveling work of the floors and had varying success with the desired effects.  The floors were only off a 1/2 " in some places but there were some troublesome ridges that we just couldn't take out without creating danger to other walls and structure so we decided to level the floors with plywood sub-flooring and shims.  Seems to work well and we're ready for the new tin roof.

Donald has already contracted to have a beautiful tin roof installed.  The roof is quite expensive but it will certainly help restore the house to the era of its creation.  Thanks Donald and Kay for the commitment.

We've purchased the flooring and we will have an Oak laminate flooring in the DR, Hall, Sun Room, Hall, BR(s) and Mud Room.  We'll keep the carpet in the LR and plan to tile the kitchen floor.

We've been busy preparing the LR, DR, and Kitchen for painting.  We have installed new blinds in the living room and have located all of the electrical and TV outlets.  The paint for all interior and exterior has been purchased and we are ready for some "help, help" painting for anyone interested.

Some of the pictures showing the progress are included in this post.  Look for more posts int the coming days and we promise to be more prompt with our updates.
