Down A Gravel Road

Down A Gravel Road
Finding Curry Road

Welcome to the Adventures of Living On Curry Road

Rye, Arkansas is located eleven miles north of Warren, AR, fifteen miles west of Monticello, AR and approximately thirty miles south of Pine Bluff, AR. Rye has been the home of the Curry family for over five generations. This family has farmed this land producing cattle, chickens, timber. The area is beautiful and the family culture is equally impressive with its generations of family that continue to live by the standards that made America a great country.

Rye, AR and the Curry family are a story of strong American values and the building of personal character, the love of God and a lot of very hard dedicated work. Donald Curry and Kay Curry are the current owners of most of the original farm land originally developed by the generations of Curry family. Kay Curry is the daughter of Jimmy and Hazel Baker and married Donald over fifty years ago. Both have continued the legacy of the farm life on Curry Road. Donald and Kay have raised a family of two daughters and one son. Mark Curry currently operates a cattle operation as well as four chicken houses on his part of the property. Lisa Tooke, wife of Dennis Tooke of Lake Charles, La and Donna Curry, of Little Rock, AR plan to retire back to the farm land when thier retirement time comes.

Jane and I were asked to help in a restoration of the 104 year old house shown above. We are so blessed to be allowed to have input as well as provide a labor of love to help restore this house to its original beauty for Donald and Kay Curry

As Jane and I came into the property with our RV, we came down the gravel road leading to Curry Road. We came down this gravel road and had to stop and take a picture. We are including that picture with this overview so you too can see the beauty of this area.

It reminded us of the book “The Painted House” by John Grisham and we hope you will get the same response.

Finally, The End and A New Roof

Well,
Larry Reppond and his crew worked for 8 days to get this roof done.  The work was so hard and they did such a great job,,  (I hope I got the spelling right, but if I didn't, excuse)
They had to work from 5:00 AM till after 2:00PM just top get to the roofing work.  Strip off, re-deck and then start the roofing.  Donald wanted it just the way it should be and that's what he got.

By the way, Larry (on the left in the blue shirt) his son Mark ( in the middle with the red shirt) and Cole ( son of Mark and Grandson of Larry) is in white.
Red, White and Blue.  Just the way they treat their customers and the basis of their family business.
These guys just work like you would not believe and they never take an easy way out.  We appreciate their efforts and standards so much and we recommend their services to anyone in the Cleveland, Drew and Bradley county areas.

Jane and I have been encouraged by these guys efforts and we've been busy also.  Been working on the Living Room and its about there.

The big problem was the ceiling.  It was about 12 inches below the place it was supposed to be when we got here and there was a split from one end of the LR to the other.  (The split actually ran the entire length of this beam and was a good inch wide.)  We thought we would try a "beam" approach to solve the problem and it seems to have turned out OK.

The ceiling is corrected to a "good enough for government work" standard and maybe a little better.  Jane selected the color and its absolutely beautiful in our minds.  We completed a "false" crown moulding effect by putting a moulding below the beams (all around the room ) and painting in between the two structures.   Hope you like it, we got the idea from Lisa who got the idea from a neat lady that is also doing a remodel in the area.   The room color is Periwinkle Blue (I'm sure its mis-spelled) but you know what I'm trying to say.

The trim is white and the ceiling is a "hue" of the blue.  (Sounds good anyway).

We've finally got the LR completed, that's second to the the BR so we're moving on at a high rate of speed.

One sad note.  One of our favorite cats is missing.  We loved watching her and her sister each morning play and enjoy lie, but she has been missing for the past day and a half so, say a prayer.  (We love our animals too much but still,,,,,,,,)

Stay tuned, the DR is next and it is going to be a neat color and we are soooo  looking forward to 'MOVING AHEAD".

Half Way There,,,,,,,, The Saga of The Tin Roof

Well,
After three days of killer heat and a lot of hard work by the Rippond crew, the first half of the house is completed.

Uh Oh!!! wrong picture,  this is the old barn across the pond.  Some how it got in the line of pictures.

Anyway,,,,
Check out this baby!!!!!!!.  Now that's a tin roof man....... does it look good or what!?  The craftsmanship of the crew is outstanding. and the appearance is exceptional.

Here's another shot,,,, they start on the south side tomorrow and man is it looking good

We have made so much progress that Jane and I have moved into the house and had to move the motor home.  We forgot what the place looked like with the ole Adventurer in the driveway.

As much as we are Rv'ers, we are sooooo glad to be in the house.  The entire place is coming together and we're going to meet our Thanksgiving Day goal, by then some.

Got a lot of help today from Donald and Kay and of course Jane works hard everyday.  Lots of more updates will be coming each day, so stay tuned.

Also, we have the help of two cats.  Pink Kitty (shown below) and White Kitty.  Jane couldn't think of names so she just started calling them by their collar color.  Works for them. Works for us.  This one loves to play in the house and enjoy the family, her sister is a hunter and a mess and does not care so much for the house.

They're part of the program now and we enjoy them.

More pictures to show "stuff" tomorrow and over the weekend.  We've finished our false beams for the living room and we'll be putting them up so we can complete the LR asap.

Hope you enjoy,,,, come to see us,,,,, and bring your work clothes.

BedRoom Almost completed

The bedroom is close to being completed.  Previous posts described the paint colors and all but this one has the completed floor and furniture located.  The room turned out perfect thanks to the furniture from Donna in her efforts to re-do her home in Little Rock.  Thanks Donna and the rest of the furniture will be demonstrated in upcoming posts.

Also, the big day has arrived.  The new tin roof is being installed as we speak.  Larry Rippond and  his crew get here every morning at 5:30 AM and start their day.  Its been so hot they have to stop a noon but they can really get a lot done in that period of time.

The old house's roof was in pretty bad shape.  Donald and Kay determined there would be a new roof and,  here it goes.  We took a "before" picture just so you could appreciate the decision and the work.

Larry and his crew of Mark Rippond (his son) Cole Rippond (nephew) and Greg plan their attack early Monday morning.

Then the work begins.   Roof man is on the top replacing the bad decking and "barge" boards so they can even begin to install the new roof.

After pulling off the old shingles, replacing and rebuilding the decking, etc. finally the first piece of tin goes on.  This is the most important part of the process and must be perfectly placed and aligned so the remainder of the roof looks "square" and performs the task of a roof.

After two days they have partially covered the north side of the house with tin.  You'll have to wait until tomorrow to see the great new look sense my camera time is limited and I'm on to other things myself.

Boy will this be a great improvement.

By the way,  Donald keeps reminding me that the roof is only done when the house is painted and guess has that job.  Pressure washing the old paint off, letting it dry, then painting the whole dern house awaits yours truly and my faithful companion.   We're ready to start so, stay tuned.

Getting There, Inch by Inch

Well, we continue to work towards our Thanksgiving deadline and we're gaining on it.
The weather has been "hotter than a $2 pistol" and thats pretty hot but we have gotten through it so far.  It is such a blessing to get to work this hard and see the benefits.  (No really, it is , it is, ,,,, I'm not kidding)

We finally got the old TV cabinet restored and usable.  We got this one from a Re-Store of Habitat For Humanity.   It was in pretty bad shape and very expensive, $20, but we worked on it and it turned out pretty good.   It has built in speakers and shelves and all the goodies, plus it goes well with our TV.
The front panels are cloth covered.

The position is not final but the TV and the stand make a great combination for either the LR or the Sun Room.

We also have worked hard on the LR.  We've gotten some of the wood work painted and are preparing for the walls.  They will be a medium blue/violet color.  There's actually a real name for the color but I don't know it or can't spell it if I had it.   We've painted the windows and the double doors into the DR and we really trying to figure out what to do with the ceiling.  The ceiling is wall board directly applied to a "lap board" wooden ceiling.  It is about 30 years old and very fragile with a lot of sagging.  We will have to repair the damage before we can paint and move on but, we're getting there.

The couch and foot stool were a gift from Margie and we are very thankful to have them.  The small lamp table on the left was actually my mom's sewing table and has all the old thread spool racks and little put out and around drawers for needles and such.  The legs are hand made and are some kind of "feet".   One of the things that really gives us a good memory of someone very special.  The lamps were from the Re-Store with some handy work and clean up.

We have also completely re-done (if thats a word) the Front BR.  The paint is country white, which is actually a lot more yellow than white, but it looks great.  The wood work is bright white and the blinds are a faux wood 2 inch blind.  ( Do I sound a little too much "interior designer"?).  {I gotta get me some chewing tobacco and go work in the fields quick!!!!!}  We also have almost completed the laminate flooring and boy (!) does it wook great! (now I sound like Elmer Flood).

Lots of knee work and hard on the hands but really easy to put down once you get the plywood flooring in place and fairly level.  We are impressed with the way there is very little waste in the sections and how it all fits together.  We're just hoping that it doesn't "pop" up during the night until we can get the quarter round back down.

Looks pretty good doesn't it?   We're tired but very happy.  Did we mention the paint was from Donna Curry and the blinds were from Lowes?

Thanks Donna, not much thanks to Lowes, they were rude.  Oh Well...

Well, thats all folks (now I sound like Donald Duck),,,,,,,for now anyway.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn,,,,,,,, I just had to throw that one in, you knew it was coming didn't you.
